Psalm 63: 1-11
1You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.
2I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
3Because your love is better life,
my lips will glorify you.
4I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
6On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night,
7Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
8I cling to you;
your right hand upholds me.
9Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;
they will go down to the depths of the earth.
10They will be given over to the sword
and become food for jackals.
11But the king will rejoice in God;
all who swear by God will glory in him,
while the mouth of liars will be silenced.
Hallowed be they name - Entire heart captivated by the wonderment of God (John Calvin)
--To praise and adore for who He is and what He's done
Five aspects to praise and adoration
THINKING
--Breaking down God's glory
--Getting to specifics of God's glory.
--Praises linked to love and goes into overdrive about why you love them.
--How do I love? Let me count the ways.
--God's costly love, tough love, undeserved love, not just Love
EXPRESSING (v.4)
--Praising with others, so it's not just in your heart.
--Articulating God's glory
--True enjoyment of something overflows into praise (CS Lewis-Reflections on the Psalms)
--True enjoyment overflows into praise.
--Enjoyment by praise.
--Can you truly enjoy something unless you share and express joy?
--Hymns and songs usually express things better than we can.
APPRAISAL (v.3)
--Comparative analysis.
--Your love is better than life.
--Turns to courage--why am I upset when I know God has my back.
--Puts our worries and anxieties in context.
--Changes what we adore.
BEHOLD (v.2)
--Sensory language (maybe not an actual vision)
--Sensory feeling - tasting sweetness vs intellectually knowing about it.
--Sensing love of God and feeling the reality of His love on your heart.
--Be hallowed in my life--trying to get God instead of other things.
--Finding God beautiful instead of just useful.
RESTING
--David was running from his life against his son Absalom.
--David knew the mess of his family was largely his fault.
--Experience of undeserved Grace and Salvation.
--Your steadfast love is better than life (ESV "steadfast") v.3
--Meditating on Christ bearing the blame.
--Jesus was getting the abandonment that David and we deserved.
--Adoring God for things only he can give us.
