Matthew 2:13-23
13When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."
14So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15where the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son."
16When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old an under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18"A voice is heard in Ramh, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her childred and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more."
19After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."
21So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."
JESUS-AN OBJECT OF HATE
--Claim of the King of the Jews threatened Herod's authority.
--Jesus did not come to show you the way, he was the way.
--Threatens our personal control over our lives.
--Herod tried to fight the authority of Jesus
--We all try to fight the authority of Jesus.
JESUS-AN AGENT OF GRACE
--Jesus came for the weak and those that admit it
--Nazareth was a backwater place.
--Don't look down at others
--Don't let things in the world rule us.
JESUS AS SALVATION
--Jesus is the true Adam, Moses, Israel, etc

The Incarnation
Savior and Teacher: A Study of Matthew - Part 1
Rev. John Lin
12 February 2012
Matthew 1:18-25
18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him ImmanueL"--which means, "God with us."
24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
God becomes flesh through Jesus Christ
Christianity begins with a Savior that teaches us how to live our lives...whereas most other religions begin with teachings and works that eventually lead to salvation.
FEAR OF INCARNATION
--Believing in it is a radically life changing event
--Joseph radically altered his life because he was told Mary carried the son of God
MEANING OF INCARNATION
--If Jesus is God, then he is to be worshipped.
--Jesus is not just a consultant
--We can't be indifferent to Him
GRACE OF INCARNATION - GOD IS WITH US
--It's like having an intimate relationship with greatness.
--Because he experienced life as one of us, our material existence matters--our work matters
--Since he experienced our lives, he can be our source of comfort
--He came off his throne to comfort the outcasts, as should we.
--Both God and man were born, died, and were resurrected.

How to be Strong
17th Sermon in the Series: Who is the Church? A Study of Ephesians
Dr. Timothy Keller
05 February 2012
Ephesians 6:14-24
14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinquish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep praying gor all the saints.
19Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.
21Tychicus, the dear brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will tell youeverything, so that you almso may know how I am what I am doing. 22I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are, and that he may encourage you.
23Peace to the brothers, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.
FULL ARMOR OF GOD
--Always wear it, even when things are going well.
--We can always do better by dealing with our impatience towards others
or worrying about life.
--Knowledge of God's safety MUST be internally felt and experienced.
--Galatians 3:10-14
--My actions should be thank God....
not an attempt to earn God's love.
--Every sin makes the next one easier: Hebrews 3:13-15
--Jesus bore the penalty we all deserve.
--Forgive our enemies and opponents with graciousness!
--Denial of Death

Spiritual Warfare
16th Sermon in the Series: Who is the Church? A Study of Ephesians
Dr. Timothy Keller
29 January 2012
Ephesians 6:10-13
10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorites, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
WHO WE FIGHT? - Evil is real.
--There is darkness in all our hearts
--The West tries to quantify evil by citing social or psychological forces
--These forces may shape evil and its manifestation, but doesn't create it
WHAT WE FIGHT
--Don't overestimate nor underestimate the devil.
--Don't blame everything on the Devil, yet don't just blame yourself.
--Devil makes a flawed person worse by aggravating your flaws.
--Temptation, and yielding to it means you are too full of yourself and your desires
It hides you from God.
--Accusation is when we think of ourselves as awful
It hides God's love from you.
Causes us to look more at our sin than at our savior.
HOW WE FIGHT
--Know the devices that Satan uses on you by knowing your flaws.
--Gospel is our armor.
Christ has underwritten our weaknesses.
